It's my understanding that very few of these come back to the list
address any more (they used to do it regularly: I remember lists
being flooded with dueling auto-receipt messages).

If they're going only to the individual sender, it's an annoyance,
but no big problem.  Receipts being distributed on the list are, and
I contact the sysadmin or postmaster from the offending address
(since normally you _can't_ contact the user).  I've assumed it was
impossible to catch them generically before distributing them on the
list, simply because if it were possible it'd have been done.
