There is not much a list owner can do about it. But there is something
the subscriber can do about it. The user here was using PMail (Pegasus)
one of a number of mail packages that seem to automatically include
the headers if you ask it to include the text in a reply. There are
many who insist is SHOULD be that way. We LISTSERV lovers differ.
The following appeared on the PMAIL list about a year ago. It is
probably time to spread the word again. But I sit here scratching
my head again as to why the original message about this to this
list did not bounce. It had headers in the body of the mail--part
of the included bounce. Oh well. Here it is. This seems to work.
Tell your Pegasus users about it.
----------------------
When replying back to some mail (and including all text, headers and all),
*please* make sure you do not include a space between your deliminator and
the header information. Better yet, don't include the headers (CNTL-Y if
using Pmail). For example:
>From: userid
>To: pmail@ua1vm
>Sub: subject
>-----------------
>
>Bill Gates eats prunes.
>
The above message should get sent correctly to the list and re-distributed.
However.....
> From: userid
> To: pmail@ua1vm
> Sub: Subject
> -------------
>
> Bill Gates eats prunes.
...this one will *not* get sent. LISTSERV will examine the body and reject
the post due to "...possible mail loop. From: To: and Sub: appear in the
body of the text."
Please either try to (1) exclude the headers or (2) do not put a space between
your deliminator (">" in this case) and the header information (which is
usually not needed anyway).
