Greetings Listowners:

Can anyone help us with the problem of tailoring the names attached to
E-mail addresses in the "From:" header on Listserv postings?

Ours is a monitored list. At the time of subscription, our subscribers
include their own names in the subscribe command, rather than the name used
by their server, e. g.

subscribe Alpine-L Sheila Paulson

That command creates the following entry in the subscriber list (the full
list header) that is retrievable by the Review Alpine-L command:

[log in to unmask] Sheila Paulson

However, when Sheila posts a message to Alpine-L its "From:" header reads:

From: Cliff Paulson <[log in to unmask]>

Clearly, Listserv has taken the "From:" header's information either from
the Paulsons' server's database (which uses husband Cliff's name) or from
the Listserv REGistry database, into which hubby Cliff may have inserted
information via the REG command.

A small percentage of Alpine-L postings display, in the "From:"
header, subscribers' ID's taken from the Alpine-L subscribers' directory,
which is based on information supplied by the SUBSCRIBE and/or ADD
commands.

My question is this:

Is there any way to get Listserv to consistently use the list subscriber
information in the return portion of the messages? What is it that
sometimes causes Listserv to pull this information from the full list
header, while at other times it does not?

To summarize:

Listserv seems to use up to three different sources of return address for
every
subscriber:

1. In posted messages, a "From:" header as sent by the subscriber's ISP.
For some subscribers, this is the only type of "From:" header used.

2. In posted messages, a "From:" header generated by Listserv from the
subscribers' directory (the full header) for the list subscribed to. For a
few subscribers, this is the only type of "From:" header used.

3. In messages reporting "Outcome of your job", a "From:" header generated
by Listserv from a central Listserv database; the contents of this central
database is created when subscribers send in a REG command. It appears
that this central REGistry (if I may call it that) is NEVER used for the
"From:" header in messages posted to the list by subscribers.

Ideally, we would like to have all messages posted to the list by our
subscribers use source no. 2 (the full header) above. Is there any way to
do this consistently?

Thanks, Louise
