Man, it sure did. Header overhead went from 50-55 lines to 15 lines per
message. On a moderately large list like mine (500 subscribers, 25-35
messages a day) that's a major savings. It speeded up the distribution
of messages dramatically. I announced it to my list ahead of time, and
no one has complained yet. So far, highly recommended for anybody
concerned with throughput (and who isn't?).

About a hundred susbcribers are on the digest, but I definitely wouldn't
want to kill the real time discussion by setting the whole list to
digest. Or are you referring to something else?

My list is fully moderated, and therefore I avoid primetime distribution
as a matter of course. I do this to keep the server performance during
the day acceptable to the people who acually own it. What I was seeing
was major delays at 2am. The SHORTHDR change has completely revitalized
the list and decreased distribution time to less than an hour, and
sometimes just a few minutes.

As the list is moderated, personal messages are not distributed, period.
Only items of wide interest, and exactly on-topic, are approved. I do
have the REPLY-TO set just as you suggest, but that's so that I can set
the Reply-To on messages I approve (such as for people asking for private
response to a public question).

Thanks for the advice, Peter.
