I don't want to get into a platform fight, but I don't think your platform
is to blame. Changing platforms will not necessarily translate into more
uptime. I think this is especially true if your expertise is not in your new
platform.

We have run Listserv and LSMTP on NT for several years dating back to the NT
3.5 era. Before that time the system ran on an IBM mainframe under VM and
used about 1/3 of an IBM 3090-600J, a six-way multiprocessor. Our choice was
stop running Listserv or find a cheaper hardware solution. The 600J list
price was about $7,000,000. The boss bought a HP Vectra Pentium Pro 150
(desktop) with 96Mb and 2 4Gb SCSI drives for about $5,000. The current
configuration is two DELL 2300's 400Mhz/512Mb, one for Listserv and one for
LSMTP mail. One thing we learned is that desktops don't make good servers.
We also locate the servers in our "glass house"; raised floor, conditioned
UPS power, climate control on UPS, etc. I think this has an overall effect
on our uptime.

Looking at the logs for the year 2000 so far, I see zero (0) boots for the
Listserv machine and zero (0) boots for the LSMTP mailer. Number of lists
2,373, 89,850 subscribers, daily traffic 224,511 deliveries (April 2000).

I hope this helps.

You should be aware that qmail sends a separate copy of a message
for each recipient, even if there are multiple recipients on the
same host. Also, qmail does not support the DSN standard for
bounce messages, so LISTSERV will not be able to understand the
bounces generated by qmail.
