All-

My co-worker sent an email to this list a few months ago [1] and never
received a reply. We're still encountering the problem so I thought I'd
give this list another shot (and perhaps include some more useful
information).

Below is an excerpt from our log (I masked the name of the list as foolist).

Jun  8 14:32:15 listserv sendmail[27461]: [ID 801593 mail.info]
k58JWFOY027460: k58JWFOY027461: clone: owner=owner-foolist-l
Jun  8 14:32:15 listserv sendmail[27461]: [ID 801593 mail.crit]
k58JWFOY027461: SYSERR(root): mailer prog died with signal 4
Jun  8 14:32:15 listserv sendmail[27461]: [ID 801593 mail.info]
k58JWFOY027461: to="|/usr/local/sbin/lsv_amin
/var/local/listserv/files/spool foolist-l",
ctladdr=<[log in to unmask]> (1/0), delay=00:00:00,
xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=32420, dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: prog
mailer (/bin/sh) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL
Jun  8 14:33:22 listserv sendmail_queue[28076]: [ID 801593 mail.info]
k58JWFOY027461: to="|/usr/local/sbin/lsv_amin
/var/local/listserv/files/spool foolist-l",
ctladdr=<[log in to unmask]> (1/0), delay=00:01:07,
xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=122420, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent

I've spent time looking over this problem by using wrappers to see the
error, etc but couldn't find much information at all. Some questions I had:

 * Is this perhaps a configuration error in sendmail for the lists,
   or something else?
 * Is this something in listserv that needs adjusted on how it responds?
 * Is it something in our alias file mis-configured?
 * Is there a system resource setting that is set too low?
 * Does the mailer prog definition need to be setup in a specific
   manner?

We have determined that this error is non-deterministic and has no real
predictable way of failing. I can run the same command on the command
line, and we can't get it to fail, but when sendmail tries to run it, it
seems to fail half the time on the first try.

I'm not that familiar with listserv itself, but more familiar with
sendmail. Any help would be appreciated as this issue is causing lots of
delays on delivery for lists.

Thanks!
