Hello everyone,
I am looking for a site that is willing to host a list (for free).
The list will be of primary interest to the Long Island, New York area and will
probably only be needed for less than a year. The size is unknown but may be
large.

Here on Long Island we are paying the highest electrical rates in the
continental United States. This is due to a large degree to the costs of a
failed nuclear power plant (Shoreham) that we Long Islanders continue to pay
hundreds of millions of dollars a year for. The State of New York, through its
agency, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), is set to takeover the private
utility (LILCO) that built the plant. The bill to date for Shoreham has been
$6 billion and LIPA has proposed spending another $7 billion to takeover
LILCO's assets. The $7 billion will be financed through the issuance of
municipal tax-free bonds and, with interest, will cost Long Islanders another
$14 billion over the next 30 years. In addition, part of what we are buying is
an 18% interest in another nuclear power plant in upstate New York that is so
expensive to run that electricity from it costs almost 3 times as much as from
oil-fired plants. In addition, our share of the costs to decommission that
plant could be another $5 billion.

The deal is being rushed through with little public disclosure of its
actual details because the IRS has given LILCO and LIPA until June 1st to
complete the arrangements, otherwise $2 billion in capital gains for LILCO will
not be exempted from federal tax, which is a requirement of the deal. If all
of this sounds like a big scam -- it is. However, LIPA has graciously acceded
to the creation of a public list for the use by the residents of Long Island to
get detailed information on the deal and to discuss it with each other and
members of both the LIPA board and members of opposition organizations. The
only caveats are that it can't cost too much (a useful excuse for not doing
it), it can't be a commercial organization that might gain from a perceived
connection to LIPA (i.e. me, because I volunteered to run the list on my firm's
equipment -- we run two others already), and it can't take too much effort to
manage it (another fine excuse for not doing it). I can help manage it if
someone out there can host the list. LIPA will use its position as a state
agency to publicize the list through the media.

I don't subscribe to this list (lstsrv-l) so please respond to me
directly. Thanks for your time.
