As many of you are painfully aware, we recently had a problem with the
FAMLYSCI mailing list. Someone at FORDMULC sent a request to join to
the list instead of to the LISTSERV. This is a common, and usually
harmless mistake. The request was sent to everyone on the list, as
usual. The trouble began when the mailer at CCMAIL.ORST.EDU sent an
error message back to the list indicating that several addresses were
unknown. This error message was not in one of the usual formats, and
did not contain the text of the letter, so LISTSERV did not detect it as
"looping mail". Instead, LISTSERV sent the error letter out to everyone
on the list, as usual, including the same group at CCMAIL.ORST.EDU.
When I finally caught it this morning, our mailer had over 6400 files in
its queue waiting to go out; most of these were to FAMLYSCI. I don't
know how many thousands of files did go out, but I apologize for the
load on the various nets, and the gobs of mail in many of your
mailboxes.
I'm open to suggestions on how to keep this from happening again. Until
I hear from the postmaster at CCMAIL.ORST.EDU, I've removed the
following users from the FAMLYSCI list:
