I put this line in my list header configurations.

Default-Options= REPRO,SUBJECTHDR, CONCEAL

It removes the need for first and last names in the list. Tracking stuff beyond just the email address is something we don't want to do in our lists.

When you add someone, or someone joins a list, and the Firstname Lastname information is given, that info is stored in the signup files. Then if an add is done without providing Firstname Lastname, the system looks for them in the signup file. If they are not provided, and not available from the signup file either, the transaction is rejected as you have seen.

If the Names are not available, one alternative is to place a asterisk where Firstname would otherwise go in the ADD syntax. This results in "(No name available)" being stored in the name field of the subscriber record. Example: add listname [log in to unmask] *

An entry in the signup files can be created using the REGISTER command also.

A listowner has asked me what the following message indicates as a result of
trying to add a user to his list. I added the user ok. He then deleted the
user and added him again with no message. Can someone tell me why this
happened? Thanks.
[log in to unmask] is not yet in the signup file. Please specify the full name
of that person, as in "ADD MYLIST [log in to unmask] Joe H. Smith".
