The list owner or site administrator might remove them.  Or perhaps when the list began the archive option was not originally enabled, but got turned on sometime later.  I am not aware of any LISTSERV process that would remove archive content without specific human behavior - or perhaps hardware failure.

Can someone tell me what determines how long archives are kept on each individual list. I see what determines when messages are archived, but do not see why some lists have archives for short durations and others for years. Thanks!
