You can certainly put aliases for all standard list-related addresses (8 per list) on your
main mail server, but how will the main mail server handle an inbound delivery error
message resulting from a passive probe?

When LISTSERV sends a passive probe, the recipient (subscriber) address is encoded in the
left-hand side of the envelope-sender address on the probe. If the probe is undeliverable,
the inbound delivery error message will have the original recipient (subscriber) address
encoded in the left-hand side of the envelope-recipient address. This technique ensures
that LISTSERV can determine the original recipient (subscriber) address on the
undeliverable probe, even if the probe was redirected to a different address before it
bounced. There are a multitude of reasons why this can happen.

As I see it, there are two ways to deal with this issue:

* Create a new list-specific probe-style alias on the main mail server every time someone
subscribes (or is added) to a list on your server, and every time an existing subscriber's
address is updated by the subscriber, the list owner, or the site administrator. In
addition to the 8 standard aliases for each list, you will need a seperate alias for every
subscriber on every list. You will also need a process that removes individual aliases
when they are no longer needed.

* Continue to use host-specific addressing and let the mail server software on the list
server handle the resolution of the left-hand side of the envelope recipient address. This
will not require any new aliases on the main mail servers.
