I have a user who is about to leave for jury duty and is panicing
because they can't unsubscribe from their lists.
A copy of one of the bounces follows. What is confusing to me, is
that they are subscribed as [log in to unmask] Everything
I know about our mail system, including the fact that they used
it to subscribe to the list, leads me to believe that that's the
From: address in their mail, the bounce message is in fact sent
to [log in to unmask], but the complaint is that CSADLNO@UCLAMVS
is not subscribed to the list. Of course that's correct.
So the questions are: What's wrong, and what is the best way to
get this user unsubscribed from the 40 lists that they are
subscribed to?

No entry for your CSADLNO@UCLAMVS address could be found in the SUPERSFT list
at PSUVM. Here are a number of possible reasons why you might still be getting
mail from the list:
1. If you are a BITNET user, you might be subscribed under an "alias" host name
for which no translation has been registered in the BITNET nodes database
(':internet.' tag in BITEARN NODES). For instance, 'NEUVM1' and 'VM.UNI-C.DK'
are the same machine, but unless that fact has been registered it is impossible
for LISTSERV to know that 'user@NEUVM1' is the same person as
[log in to unmask] If you suspect this might be the case, resend your request
via both e-mail and TELL/SEND.
2. You might be subscribed under an equivalent yet different address - for
instance, one with explicit gatewaying, or an X.400 address with different
ordering of the various components, etc. You could send a REVIEW command and
inspect the list membership to find out whether this is the case, and ask one
of the list owners to remove that address from the list.
3. You could be subscribed to the list under another account, for which mail is
being automatically forwarded to your CSADLNO@UCLAMVS account. In that case you
should be able to leave the list by resending the signoff request from the
account in question.
4. You could be subscribed to the list indirectly, via a "redistribution" list.
That is, one of the subscribers to the LISTSERV list is in fact a mailing list,
to which you are yourself subscribed (note that this "sub-list" may not be a
LISTSERV list). In that case, the only way for you to stop getting SUPERSFT
postings is to contact the administrator of this sub-list and ask him to sign
you off.
