Erm.. What do you call "really high volume"? I used to think that
50K msgs a day was a lot. Now I yawn at 400K. And that's only growth
over the last 2 years on one of our machines.

To add to Eric's commentary regarding any white papers as being obsolete,
I'll add the following:

It doesn't take much work at all to set up a fairly high volume listserv
machine - our main load is currently handled on an RS6000-250, running
AIX 3.2.5, Sendmail 8.7.5, and Listserv 1.8B. Put in a 66mz PowerPC chip,
160M of memory, a 2G disk, and you're ready to rock-and-roll. We really don't
have all THAT many local hacks/mods/patches to the configuration.

The problem that most people overlook is that when you are processing
300K or 400K messages a day (which the above configuration does without
straining), your *big* cost becomes *PEOPLE*, not hardware/software.
With 451 lists on one server, and another 176 on the other, it ends up being
at least a part-time job for 3 staffers here.
