This may - or may not - be possible, depending on the mechanism that the
subscriber is using to send the auto-reply. If the auto-reply message is being
sent by a process on the subscriber's mail server, this should be possible. I
believe that most MTA-based auto-reply programs use the envelope-sender address.
If, however, the message is being sent as a result of an auto-reply rule in the
subscriber's email client, it is highly unlikely that the subscriber will be
able to configure the rule to check the envelope-sender address, because most
client-based rules use the 'From:' address, rather than the envelope-sender
address.

Another approach might be for the subscriber to configure his/her auto-reply
mechanism to respond only to messages on which his/her address appears in the
'To:' or 'cc:' header. This will cause the mechanism to ignore most list
postings. This will not work if the subscription is set to FULLHDR, because
this option causes LISTSERV to put the subscriber's address on the 'To:' line.

Given the nearly infinite number of ways in which an auto-reply mechanism can
be misconfigured, some list owners may set a subscriber to DIGEST or NOMAIL,
or delete the subscriber from the list, if a list posting results in an
auto-reply which comes to the attention of the list owner. There are situations
in which these may not be viable options for the list owner.
