Another possibility but don't be surprised if Eric says I'm all wrong.

1) User@bitnode sends subscribe to LISTSERV@FQDN instead of
   [log in to unmask]

2) Postmaster@bitnode has ignored the implicit request in
DOMAIN NAMES to send all mail for DomainName to mailer@listnode
and routes it via the InterNet.

3) Mail arrives at listnode with a source route due to being forced
   through a gateway.

4) LISTSERV unravels the source route and stores User@bitnode in
PERMVARS to wait for the confirmation.

5) User sends confirmation the same way but LISTSERV uses the
source route to search PERMVARS and finds no match.

Circumvention: BITNET users should use the BITNET node name when
sending to LISTSERV rather than the FQDN.
