Regarding these receipt messages, Eric gave me the command to set the
mail headers to "short" so that these confirmation messages aren't sent
out in postings, and that worked just fine *until* we had to take down
the systems for maintenance.  When it came back up, apparently someone
posted another one of these messages asking for automatic confirmation,
and we wound up in AutoReply Hell again.
 
So it would appear that the following command has to be executed every
single time we start the listserv:
 
        QUIET SET listname SHORT FOR *@*
 
And don't forget the word "QUIET"!  The owner of the list in question
is none too pleased with me for being in a hurry and overlooking that
part.  It seems a thousand users just got notified that their subscrip-
tion options have been modified, and he got cc'ed on every one of them.
 
My question is WHAT do I have to do to make this change permanent?
Having to reset this for every list every time the listserv is started
doesn't seem reasonable.  I need a better solution!
