Hi;

I've read on the web that your group sponsors mailing lists
I would like to apply for starting such a mailing list.

Based on similar lists that have existed like it in the past, I
estimate that it could grow to a maximum size of between 100 - 200
subscribers, with about 20 posts a day.

The topic would be Buddhist Insight Meditation ( Vipassana ).

Insight Meditation is the oldest form of Buddhist Meditation.
It is open to everyone of every background, as it involves no religious
creed, no ritual, or visualizations. It is a set of techniques
designed to improve concentration and teach people how to be better
observers of life so that they can decide what to believe for themselves.

Insight Meditation offers many side benefits that have made it
come into public interest over the last few years. The work Jon
Kabbat-Zinn does with his revolutionary chronic pain clinic in Boston
is based on Insight Meditation techniques. Insight Meditation has
been found useful in improving concentration, clearing up depression,
dealing with chronic pain, stress management, and improving an overall
sense of well-being.

In short it is a simple technique open to anyone that offers many
benefits. Below the dotted line is my FAQ for the proposed group.
I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to consider
hosting my proposed list. I usually don't read the list so please
email me your answer at the following address:

Thanks Again!

This list-server is dedicated to Jim Lassen-Willems. His insights
helped to create for Vipassana practitioners a mailing list which
taught, inspired, and supported. It is in memory of his good deeds
and his good efforts that this new list has been created.

                     ---------------------------

The Vipassana-Practice-Moderated list is an online forum, whose
emphasis is on a supportive listening to and discussion of the
practical issues that face the Vipassana practitioner in daily life.

This list exists for the those who do not have a Sangah around them,
for those who do, for the single parent, for all parents, for the lone
person, for the student, or anyone else trying to practice mindful
living in the everyday world. The list is here as a virtual Dhamma
Hall, which you can visit between tasks at work, school, or home. A
place where it is possible to find support and inspiration for the
effort to lead a mindful life.

People from all backgrounds are welcome to come, read, listen, observe
and make contributions.

This list will be moderated in such a way as to ensure an atmosphere
where people of all backgrounds, ...... any sex, any sexual
orientation, any religion, any nationality, any race, will feel
comfortable in sharing their personal experiences related to Vipassana
and in receiving what others have to offer in return.

Friends, as most of us know by now the Internet can sometimes be a
place of unskillful conversation. Below are some guidelines
describing what is expected from a subscriber to this list. Please
peruse them and the rest of this short FAQ before posting to the list.

                         2. Rules Of Conduct
                         --------------------

1. Right Speech Is Practiced On This List
    ---------------------------------------
Right Speech can be encapsulated into 4 guidelines:

    1. Restraint From Falsehoods ( "Do I know this to be true?" )
    2. Restraint From Slander ( Speech with ill will as its intent )
    3. Restraint From Harsh Language ( in tone and in choice of words)
    4. Restraint From Idle Speech ( "Is It Useful? Does it help me or others?")

2. Discussion Of Personal Experience From Daily Life Is The Rule:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Discussions of the Four Noble Truths, The Noble Eight Fold Path
and other materials are encouraged, if they relate directly to
daily practice. For those wishing a philosophical discussion
of Buddhism, please check out the Buddhist Internet Resource File:

                   --------------------------------

                      4. The Moderation Policy
                      -------------------------

Goal:
--------
To provide an atmosphere where all people feel comfortable sharing
their personal experiences and extending their hands out in
friendship.

The Moderation Policy:
----------------------
For most of what goes on the list the moderation policy will be
" hands off ". Active moderation will take place when there is a
blatant disregard for the guidelines established in this FAQ.

How You Can Help The List:
--------------------------
Most of the time I will participate on the list only as a subscriber. I
will be relying on this participation and on complaints/comments sent
to me to monitor the list. Please let me know about any problems you
have or any good suggestions you might want to offer.

Comments Or Complaints Regarding The List:
------------------------------------------
All concerns about the moderation of this list should be sent to me
privately, off-list, with "MODERATOR" in the subject heading, and a
copy of any offending material. All posts where I act as a moderator
