hop counting leaves a bit to be desired.  between the net getting wider
and things like a trip though the listserv backbone adding more than ten
hops sendmail's default values are taxed.

i just (as in today) increased the hop limit on our hub to 30. i.e.

O MaxHopCount=30

the default is 17.
