This is a good point.  If a maintainer issues a LISTS OWNED command
every mailing list will appear in the result.  The other method
suggested (going to the web interface and seeing what lists pop up)
will fail similarly.

If this is an issue, I suppose you could temporarily revoke the
mailing list maintainer's maintainer status, have him or her issue
the LISTS OWNED command, and then reinstate him or her as a
maintainer.
