We run LISTSERV 15.5 on Linux and have SMTP_FORWARD_n configured, and I see log
entries which appear to be from the SMTP worker processes.  I do not recall
seeing these log entries when we ran LISTSERV 1.8e on Solaris with the same
SMTP_FORWARD_n configuration.

In the following example, the first 2 lines appear to document the creation of
the .mail file containing a message for 108 recipients; the next 2 lines appear
to document the acknowledgement to the sender; and the last 2 lines appear to
document the hand-off of the message to an actual SMTP process by an SMTP worker
process.  Have I misinterpreted anything?
