The basic methods I can think of are:

1) Look at the mailing list archives if there are any.

2) Look at the changelog if there is one.

3) Look in the LISTSERV logs for activity pertaining to the mailing list.

4) Subscribe and see what's going on.

5) Ask one of the subscribers.
