I would be interested in hearing the opinions of maintainers who are
running 1.8d on Unix, in particular, if you believe 1.8d has been as
reliable as 1.8c.

We are considering upgrading but are a little hesitant with installing a
beta version in a production environment.

Which leads to my next question: I'm also wondering if it would be
possible to get 1.8d and run it on a separate machine for a while for
testing.  In other words, do we have to install it on top of 1.8c?
