I (and many others) would argue that it is responding in a completely
correct manner. It doesn't understand ESMTP so it replies 500 Invalid
syntax when it receives EHLO.

It doesn't know what EHLO means so how is the 500 not an appropriate
command?

If you claim that it does not matter what is connecting to your Listserv
server, use telnet and see if you can get it to accept an EHLO from you.
Bet it doesn't, so it's not just Barracuda.

wbrown@wbrown-D630:~$ telnet listserv 25
Trying 168.169.6.235...
Connected to listserv.wnyric.org.
Escape character is 'Ø]'.
220 LISTSERV.WNYRIC.ORG ready.
ehlo
500 Invalid syntax.

The spam filter in front of our Listserv has no problem stepping back to
plain SMTP.

Because it is big time borked if it fails to follow RFC's that have been
in place for many years.

Or maybe there was a setting on that device that is causing it to not fall
back to SMTP is it cannot use ESMTP.

The bottom line is it is not Listserv's fault that the Barracuda box
doesn't follow RFC's.

LSoft doesn't seem to be like other large software companies with
undocumented features. They seem to be pretty open with how their product
works. But their staff can chime in if there are such switches.
