Hmm.. this smells like a CNAME confusion.

Our local solution was to just use 'listserv.vt.edu' as the real, actual,
DNS-registered hostname.

You can *SORT* of fix this on some more recent versions of Sendmail by
using 'FEATURE(nocanonify)' in your sendmail.mc file and rebuilding the .cf
file, but this will *NOT* fix the fact that *other* sites will still be
canonifying it and rewriting it as the 'unix1' name.  If you can't rename
the machine, this *may* be a sufficient fix - at least your OUTBOUND mail
will look OK.  You will, of course, have to continue listing both names
in the Sendmail '$=w' macro (set via a Cw line, or /etc/sendmail.cw, or what
have you).

This of course may not be an option if your 'unix1' machine is also serving
other services as well (POP, WWW, or what have you).

If you're not using Sendmail, you'll have to talk to somebody who understands
the mailer (qmail, exim, or what have you).
