Wow! You were right on track Al! Your suggestion is exactly what I needed,
but with a tiny change. What worked was:

  lcmdx cronkite address passwd "query listname for *"

In your suggestion, the lcmdx utility does not see the name of the host,
address, and password, but enclosing just the actual Listserv command in
quotes worked like a charm! Now, I can write a function that uses that
information.
