I know for a fact that I run UPDATE statements all the time, so I know
SELECT statements aren't the only T-SQL commands allowed, as for SP's I
don't know, never tried it.

Subject: SV: mail merge using stored procedure fails
That is really lame!
Why is it so?
Mustn't there be a way around just SELECT? After all Stored Procedures is
the proffesional way to work with a databaseapplication.

You can't. Only SELECT statements are allowed.
