Yes, you also have to delete the listname.html files. If they are present, LISTSERV will not go look at hundreds of weekly indexes multiplied by thousands of lists just in case someone deleted them; it will assume that they are fine. Deleting the listname.html file is a trigger to tell LISTSERV to make sure the indexes are there.

PS: It would not hurt to defragment before you do this, especially if the volume was near-full when you deleted the old archives.
