Ahh, X400. You can almost give your life history in an x400 address. X400 is based on an abundance of information to identify the end user. It is frequently more than is needed. You might drop some fields that look superflous and try to contact the user with that. This may make the address short enough to add to the list, and the user will receive postings. But if the address is not identical to the "From" address that is automatically inserted when that user sends a message, then he/she will not be able to post directly to the list, since that address will not match the one in the subscriber list. Also, in many cases, an X400 address has an equivalent standard Internet address. Check with the user.

The 93 char address, is actually X400 format. I have subsequently tried to
contact the owner of the address, with little success I might add. It is
possibly a legacy address left over from some time ago I guess.

Anyone with a 93 char email address is asking for trouble. Who is going to
be able to type such an address without making mistakes? And look at his
business card!! ;) He is probably having problems with many other sites,
as would anyone with an address over 63 char. Send him a message to get a
shorter email address, or if the problem is a long host name, tell him to
have his system admin alias the mail host to shorten the name.
IMHO, anything over 40 is ridiculous.

Darn, So basically whatever I do with this 93 char email address I am not
going to be able to register it on a list as it is ?

Actually it has to fit the address and the fullname into 80 characters.
The last 20 characters of the 100 are reserved for the user option string
(the "flags" you're referring to). On the other hand if you have a long
userid the fullname simply gets truncated, so in theory you can have an
80-character userid@host in a list (and I've had many nearly that long).
I suspect Margaret's mail client is simply wrapping the ADD line.
