Can I speed up dialog with SMTP on AIX?

It appears that listserv sends 100 addresses over to smtp and then waits a while. Here are two adjacent log entries:

14 Dec 1999 15:47:42 Mail posted via SMTP to [log in to unmask]
14 Dec 1999 15:48:04 Mail posted via SMTP to [log in to unmask]

Can I speed this up at all?  It looks like waits anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds between batches.  I'm sure that is dependent on the mix of addresses, but I seems like a waste of time and I think is contributing to my backlog.
