If your files are the equivalent of notebooks, just name them in the same
format as LISTSERV notebook files ( listname.log????? ), put them into the
same directory your list's LISTSERV-created notebook files go, and they
will show up in the output of an INDEX LISTNAME command. If you want to do
fancier indexes, or do things that are named in some way besides the
logfile format, you have a problem with the current file system. But
considering that the search functions are now running in the LISTSERV 1.8c
betas, maybe the advanced file server functions aren't as far off any more
either ...

There are no filelists under the 1.8b Unix LISTSERV filesystem ... that's
why they don't work :-)

Make a fake list used for nothing but accessing that collection of files,
and name all the files listname.log?????

Sorry if you already had an answer to this ... I'm behind on some of my
mail.
