Here's an example of the effect of source routing on the LISTSERV
subscription confirmation process. This is rather confusing to
the neophyte user.

1) I used "TELL LISTSERV AT UBVM SUB GOPHERN" to request a subscription
to the GOPHERN list. Here's the header of the response.

Received: from UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU by SUVM (Mailer R2.10 ptf000) with BSMTP id

Subject: Command confirmation request (41E4F9)

X-LSV-ListID: GOPHERN

Your command:

                        SUBSCRIBE GOPHERN Glenn Malling

etc.

2) I used RiceMail to reply. Note the FQDN in the From: line of
the above message. My reply was sent to [log in to unmask]
not [log in to unmask] DOMAIN NAMES instructs the mailer to send the
message to SMTP@UBVM resulting in the source route of my address
as shown in the next response.

The confirmation code you gave (41E4F9) does not correspond to any pending
command, either because you did not confirm the command in time or because
you mistyped the confirmation code. Check the confirmation request again to
make sure you typed the code exactly as it was shown. If you lost it, just
issue the command again to get a new code.

3) I then tried another reply from RiceMail after changing the To:
line from [log in to unmask] to [log in to unmask] This
   time the confirmation was accepted.

Confirming:
> SUBSCRIBE GOPHERN Glenn Malling
You have been added to list GOPHERN.

It seems to me that the problem is in having DOMAIN NAMES route mail
directly to a SMTP that will apply a source route. Had the entry
for BUFFALO.EDU in DOMAIN NAMES referenced MAILER@UBVM instead
*and* had MAILER@UBVM directly delivered mail addressed to
[log in to unmask] without passing it through a SMTP
the confusion would not have happened.
