  The message,  "Error opening file (spid)"  refers to an error  trying to read
the first card of the file to determine  its format. It is either an empty file
(shouldn't be  -- they are purged  before going this  far) or a file  which has
been improperly closed  during a SHUTDOWN or suchlike. Anyway,  the EXECIO CARD
interface could not open the reader file.
