If you were to delete the notebooks with a PUT operation, LISTSERV would
take notice and then automatically reindex what's left.

Otherwise I would say yes, delete the db* files when you prune them from
outside of LISTSERV.  They will then be rebuilt the next time someone tries
to search the list's archives.
