I've check (vig DiG) that this host is MXed tosn01.sncc.lsu.edu
which is a PMDF system, which is found in 3 Names Servers, which
seem to agree on that and the IP address.
 
SMTP VRFY and Finger are indeterminant.
 
I don't think it's HEARN SMTP V2R2 having problems with MX.
 
Maybe the request came thru via bitnet which truncated something ... or
a GIVE cmd was issued with an incorrect userid@node?
