The total number of ALL recipients.
The problem is that in method (1), you forgot to allow for the lines:
27 Sep 2001 00:21:58 Mail forwarded to PLUM.EASE.LSOFT.COM for 11 recipients.
I bet if you total up all THOSE lines, it should be quite close to
(338,786 - 266,665) or 72,121 recipients.
