L-Soft has noticed a sudden change in DMARC behavior at aol.com. The
problem is not with aol.com or aim.com addresses but with *@netscape.net
addresses. AOL owns and handles mail for *@netscape.net via the same mail
servers as for aol.com, aim.com, etc.

From the LISTSERV log:

22 Sep 2016 19:23:19 Processing mail from [log in to unmask] for EXAMPLE
DMARC> v=DMARC1; p=none; pct=100; rua=mailto:[log in to unmask];
ruf=mailto:[log in to unmask];

But then we got a bunch of these:

5.2.1 521 5.2.1 : (DMARC:AOL) This message failed DMARC Evaluation for an
AOL Domain. For more information please visit
http://postmaster-blog.aol.com/2014/04/22/aol-mail-updates-dmarc-policy-to-reject/

LISTSERV is behaving correctly (i.e. NOT re-writing the From: address)
because the DMARC record for *@netscape.net is 'p=none' instead of
'p=reject'. However the mail servers at aol.com have recently been told to
apply the AOL DMARC policy to *@netscape.net addresses resulting in sudden
deletions. This has changed on 9/22 or 9/23. Mail from 9/21 and earlier
was delivered successfully.

This problem needs to be corrected by AOL/Netscape, but fortunately there is
a workaround for users of LISTSERV version 16.0-2014b (Build-Date: of your
LISTSERV instance must be 8 May 2014 or later). This version does an
automatic lookup of DMARC policy record on all incoming From: domains.
Domains with a policy of of p=reject or p=quarantine will have the From:
address re-written, as detailed previously.

However, you can set a site configuration variable to force a rewrite of
*@netscape.net and other problematic domains:

Windows: (site.cfg)
DEBUG_DMARC_REWRITE=netscape.net

Unix: (go.user)
DEBUG_DMARC_REWRITE="netscape.net"
export DEBUG_DMARC_REWRITE

A restart of the LISTSERV service is needed with any change to site
configuration variables. This can also be set via the WWW interface.

We hope you find this information helpful.
