LISTEARN List Processor, Release 1.0
-------------------------------------------
LISTEARN 1.0 (c) EARN Association 1989,1990 is derived from:
LISTSERV 1.5o (c) Eric Thomas 1986,1987,1988,1989
LISTEARN 1.0 Distribution Announcement
1. Availability
This version of the code is available to all registered LISTEARN
sites. An automatic distribution shall be shipped to those
sites that have signed and sent back the LISTEARN Registration
form AND who are using LISTSERV 1.5o. This will prevent sites
who have signed the LISTEARN agreement and then signed another
LISTSERV agreement with Eric Thomas from getting a shipment.
Such sites need to get in touch with TURGUT@TREARN if they wish
to order LISTEARN 1.0
However, please note that this is a temporary fix and in the
subsequent releases (1.1, 1.2, etc) all registered LISTEARN
sites -regardless of their current server- may receive a server
code update.
The shipment date is expected to be the first week of March.
2. Compatibility
The compatibility requirements are same as LISTSERV 1.5o
3. Description of changes from LISTSERV 1.5o
* Integral support for HEX,XXE,BTOA,VMARC and EBC file formats.
* .BITNET suffix not required during a delete operation to
enable easier removal of members.
* Notebook file no longer closed for each line of the mail
header a for a performance gain.
* Several new subject headings allow better detection of mailer
rejection messages and reduce the likeliness of a mailer and
list loop.
* Optional BSMTP DIST2 delivery lessens load on gateways and
increases DIST2 processing considerably.
* Automatic database refresh upon receiving error during a
search.
* NODEINFO GLOBALV group purged after processing an updated
BITEARN NODES to prevent discrepancies.
* Server no longer interrupts the shipment of a $PACKAGE because
of quota limitations.
* New user exit LSV$SUB to prevent the users of certain node(s)
(..that run a NEWS system, for example) to subscribe to certain
local lists.
* Server now provides a weekly report on the files that are sent
during the week.
* Hang-ups during mail distribution with certain mail headers
have been eliminated.
* Users with very long network addresses are now serviced using
MAILER V2's continuation symbol.
* The list of files to be execloaded when the server starts has
been extended to include four frequently-used sections of the
code for a performance gain.
4. Modules Added to the Code
The following modules have been added to LISTEARN for this
release:
* LSVGSTAT - "Send collected statistics" routine
* VMARC: Archive files manager of John S. Fisher <FISHER@RPIECS>
* PDEBC,PDUUE,PDXXE,PDHEX and PDBTOA: File encoding utilities of
Dr. Gustaf Neumann <NEUMANN@AWIWUW11>
5. Distribution Details
The server will install the code itself, unless there are
problems experienced during the installation.
Sites wishing to disable BSMTP distribution may do so by placing
BSMTP = 0 in their LOCAL SYSVARS file. It is enabled by
default.
6. Distribution Contents
In order to avoid confusion among users and to abide by the
agreement between EARN and Eric Thomas, entire LISTSERV program
library and documentation had to be edited to differentiate the
two types of server. Thus, this rather large shipment contains
an edited version of all EXEC, MEMO and other files.
The files that have been substantially modified are:
