I was carefully ambiguous about where this bug resides. But I lean toward
blaming it on LMAIL. At the very least it is a bug in the interaction
between LMAIL and FAL SMTP.

I can't swear it's related, but it sounds suspiciously like it might be.

I don't mean to trash CUNY. I just picked them for my test, because I'd
seen something like this earlier that hapend to pass through them.
I SENDFILEd the following BSMTP file to SMTP AT CUNYVM:
---------- BSMTP FILE ---------
HELO WUVMD.Wustl.edu
MAIL FROM:<[log in to unmask]>
RCPT TO:<@WUVMD.BITNET:HARVEY@WUVMC>
DATA
Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1992 11:40:39 -0600
From: HARVEY@WUVMD
To: harvey@wuvmc
Just a test
.
QUIT
-------end BSMTP FILE ---------
The following result was returned to me at [log in to unmask] Let me type
that again: [log in to unmask]
--------- mail result ---------
Return-Path: <@WUVMD.WUSTL.EDU,@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU:[log in to unmask]>
Received: from CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (NJE origin MAILER@CUNYVMV2) by WUVMD.WUSTL.EDU
(LMail V1.1c/1.7e) with BSMTP id 8941 for <[log in to unmask]>; Fri,
7 May 1993 20:59:19 -0600
Received: from CUNYVM (NJE origin SMTP@CUNYVM) by CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (LMail
V1.1d/1.7f) with BSMTP id 1776; Fri, 7 May 1993 21:58:59 -0400
Received: from WUVMD.Wustl.edu by CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R2)
with BSMTP id 5622; Fri, 07 May 93 21:58:57 EDT
Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1992 11:40:39 -0600
From: [log in to unmask]
To: [log in to unmask]
Just a test
------end mail result ---------
This is repeatable. It also happens when I telnet to CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU's
SMTP port, and type all that in. (Although, that's a much bigger pain...)
