We have a number of staff-wide lists that contain approximately 40,000
subscribers. Here's what we've had done:

These lists are always held and have a daily-threshold of 1 message. At
certain times during the night and early morning hours a script is executed
that frees these lists up. If there's a message intended for one of these
lists it is delivered and the lists are held again until the next time.
This works very well for us because it doesn't slow down the system to the
point that other LISTSERV activities can't be done.

We are currently using sendmail 8.11.3 with LISTSERV 1.8d and system
performance is not hampered.

Subject: Building list(s) for 100,000 subscribers

We have the need to send to all of our faculty, staff and students from time
to time. Around 100,000 people. What I have been doing is creating 10
lists with around 10K people on each. Each list has a different prime time.
One starts at 11 p.m, next one at midnight, then 1 a.m. etc. This way we
don't cripple our e-mail system. Is there a better way to do this?
Building 10 lists and sending the mail to them is a bit of a nuisance.
Would rather have on list with 100k and have some system trickle the mail
out overnight.
