That change may help with requests for future logs, but it does nothing for
requests for existing logs.

I have taken two different approaches to this problem in the past.

1. Put a copy of the log file in a location from which it can be downloaded
using http or ftp.

2. Split a monthly log file into weekly log files.  Given the fact that you
cannot retrieve the log file by email, this will have to be done on the list
server, using available tools for copying and editing files.
