URLs are guaranteed to be case sensitive, so it should not matter what case you use in auto-generated links, you are guaranteed to get the same case back. There was no particular reason not to use lowercase, the convention was that URLs that users are not supposed to type in themselves (using a keyboard, as opposed to following or copying a link) are in uppercase. But you are going to have a huge problem with the web interface anyway if your browser translates everything to lowercase. Not that I am aware of any such browsers, mind you. This is a very puzzling incident - any browser doing that would give you so much trouble that it would never manage to build a following.
