There is a feature that I have wished for in NETSERV, but that would also be
relevant to situations like this with LISTSERV. What I am thinking about is
a slightly different kind of AFD. Currently AFD sends you the file each
time it changes. For infrequently updated files this is just what you want.
However, for frequently updated files (such as NETSERV FILELIST), this can
be a pain to the subscriber and result in unnecessary network load. My idea
is a sort of periodic AFD, which says something like "send me the file over
the weekend if it has changed anythime during the previous week." Then if
the file changes 5 times during a week, I am sent it only once, benefiting
both me and the network. It probably would be a real pain to implement on a
general basis for any time period, but might be more easily implemented on
just a weekly basis as a third type of subscription (in addition to AFD and
FUI). Then the server would wake up once on the weekend and process all of
the weekly subscriptions at one time.
