Well, it looks like here's what happened:
 
1) ARIZVM1 is MX'ed to a machine called mayreau.u.arizona.edu
 
2) mayreau is running Sendmail 8.7.2, which implies it's a Unix machine.
 
3) I'm 95% certain that mayreau does *NOT* have a hook to reroute .bitnet
domain mail.
 
Moral: Double-check your mailer configuration, to make sure that you're still
poinging YOUR bitnet gateway at a machine that's actually able to do it...
