Perhaps a more judicious use of SEARCH arguments would "hit" upon
the type of articles for which you are searching?  Assuming
that subject: does contains more text than default INDEX formatting
produces, you could provide your own INDEX output options e.g.,
 
INDEX #.5 subject.73
 
There is an OUTLIM= keyword that is supported at the JOB and various
STEP levels.  Unless you explicitly typed MANY PRINT statements, each
with an OUTLIM=, I don't think it Database Search would limit output
from each "hit".
 
I suggest followup to the list LDBASE-L (at ukanvm aka
