Yup - I finally ran across
http://www.lsoft.com/manuals/1.8d/qs/editlogs.html and deleted the
notebook instead of spending time on the edit option to delete one
message.  Just as a comment for future product bells'n'whistles
suggestion this process might be simplified by a web interface allowing
for a week/month to be chosen and or keyword based search to delete...

After going crazy for a while and started looking elsewhere for the
culprit I realized a couple of zombie lsv processes running.  Killed
them all, restarted listserv to magically have the archives obey the
Private command.
