I though I had it.  I ran 1.8e on our AIX system all day Saturday and it worked fine.  I put 1.8d back for the rest of the weekend and started 1.8e this morning, figuring that I finally got there.

Well rats!  So I figured I'd have to back up *again* to 1.8d.  As I was typing this note, I recalled seeing something in the release notes about large sites.  We have over 3,900 lists.  I pulled out the notes and found the section about "Enhancements for the HPO version" and set "TUNE_MANY_LISTS=1" and restarted, holding my breath.

Whew!  That seems to have solved the problem.  Yay!  Was this variable around last September when tried 1.8e?
