For VM the limit is 8 characters.  For other platforms, starting with
LISTSERV 1.8c there is no limit.  However L-Soft strongly recommends
using names of 32 characters or less whenever possible as excessively
long names tend to result in mail delivery problems.

The issue is discussed further in section 7.4 of the Site Manger's
Manual in the sub-section labeled "Maximum length of the list name".
