This may be what they're looking for:

 Newsgroups: news.lists,news.announce.newusers,news.answers
Subject: Publicly Accessible Mailing Lists, Part */*
From: [log in to unmask] (Stephanie da Silva)
 Frequency: monthly
 Archive-name: mail/mailing-lists/part1
Summary: 594 mailing lists in six postings
 Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1993 01:07:18 GMT

Check in a news.answers newsgroup near you. Or, send mail to
[log in to unmask], with the commands listing each of
the parts:

        send usenet/news.answers/mail/mailing-lists/part1
        ...
        send usenet/news.answers/mail/mailing-lists/part6

The list of FAQ lists is also quite helpful:

From: [log in to unmask] (Jonathan I. Kamens)
 Newsgroups: news.lists,news.announce.newusers,news.answers
Subject: List of Periodic Informational Postings, Part */*
 Archive-name: periodic-postings/part1

Send this to [log in to unmask] to get the pieces:

        send usenet/periodic-postings/part1
        ...
        send usenet/periodic-postings/part6

[Who says that the Internet's FAQs aren't organized? ;-)]
