MAILMAXL defaults to the value of FILEMAXL, and FILEMAXL in turn
defaults to 100K.  Note that under VM this can be more complicated
as there typically is an entry for MAILMAXL in one of the SYSVARS
files which overrides the default in the MODULE.

This is the way it's defined in the 1.8d documentation FWIW :)
