The physical way to edit the LOG files is to send the command

  GET listname LOGyymm

Edit the offending lines and then

  PUT listname LOGyymm PW=xxxxxx

The index files for the LISTSERV WWW interface and so forth will be
rebuilt as needed.

The ethical issues about modifying LOG files are, as Peter says, a
decidedly slippery slope. Personally I will not edit them on my lists.
